And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
And God said, 'Sarah your wife will definitely have a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will make my promise with him that will last forever, and with his descendants after him.'
God is promising Abraham that Sarah will have a son named Isaac, and through Isaac, God's eternal covenant will continue to future generations.
📚 Historical Context
This promise came when Abraham was 99 years old and Sarah was 89, both well past normal childbearing age. Abraham had just asked God about his son Ishmael, but God clarified that the covenant would continue specifically through Isaac, the promised son of Sarah. The name Isaac means 'laughter,' reflecting Sarah's earlier laughter when she heard she would have a child.
