I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will definitely bring you back up again. And Joseph will be the one to close your eyes when you die.
God is promising Jacob that He will be with him during his journey to Egypt, will bring his descendants back to the promised land, and that he will die peacefully with his son Joseph by his side.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Genesis, Jacob (also called Israel) was facing a severe famine in the land of Canaan and decided to move his family to Egypt, where his son Joseph had risen to a position of power. God appeared to Jacob in a vision at Beersheba to reassure him, promising to accompany him on this journey and to bring his descendants back to the promised land after his death. This event marks a pivotal moment in the biblical narrative, as it leads to the Israelites' eventual enslavement in Egypt and their later exodus.
