And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.
I saw that even after I divorced unfaithful Israel because of all her acts of spiritual adultery, her sister nation Judah wasn't afraid and went out and acted like a prostitute too.
God is saying that even after punishing Israel for their unfaithfulness, Judah learned nothing and made the same mistakes.
📚 Historical Context
In the 7th century BC, the prophet Jeremiah was speaking to the people of Judah during a time of spiritual decline, warning them about their unfaithfulness to God through idolatry, which he compared to marital adultery. God had already judged the northern kingdom of Israel for their persistent sins by allowing them to be conquered and exiled by the Assyrians in 722 BC, essentially "divorcing" them as a symbol of broken covenant. Despite witnessing Israel's downfall, Judah failed to heed the lesson and continued in similar rebellion.
