Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet:
This is what I will do to this place, says the LORD, and to the people who live here, I will make this city like Tophet.
God is warning that He will bring the same kind of devastating judgment on Jerusalem that was associated with the cursed place called Tophet.
📚 Historical Context
During the prophet Jeremiah's time in ancient Judah, the nation was facing God's judgment due to widespread idolatry and moral corruption, as the people had turned to false gods and practices like child sacrifice. Jeremiah was instructed to perform a symbolic act, smashing a potter's jar in the Valley of Hinnom, to illustrate Jerusalem's impending destruction. Tophet, a site in that valley associated with horrific rituals, represented utter desolation and served as a warning of what God would do to the city.
