Therefore, look, the time is coming, says the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Tophet or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but will be called the Valley of Slaughter.
God is declaring that a place once used for terrible sacrifices will become known for the massive destruction that will happen there as judgment.
📚 Historical Context
In the time of the prophet Jeremiah, around the 7th century BC, the Valley of Hinnom near Jerusalem was a notorious site where the people of Judah engaged in pagan rituals, including child sacrifices to gods like Molech, which directly violated God's commandments. Jeremiah was delivering a message from God to warn the nation of Judah about the consequences of their idolatry and moral decay, predicting that this valley would become a scene of horrific slaughter due to the impending Babylonian invasion. This prophecy highlighted God's justice in response to persistent rebellion against His covenant.
