Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter.
Therefore, look—the time is coming, says the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Tophet or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but will be called the Valley of Slaughter.
God is declaring that a place once used for terrible sacrifices will become known for the massive destruction that will happen there as judgment.
📚 Historical Context
The Valley of Ben Hinnom (Tophet) was located just outside Jerusalem and had been used by some Israelite kings for child sacrifice to pagan gods like Molech. This practice was an abomination to God and represented Israel's spiritual unfaithfulness. Jeremiah is prophesying that this already-defiled place will become the site of such great slaughter during Babylon's siege of Jerusalem that it will be renamed accordingly.
