And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.
The houses in Jerusalem and the royal palaces of Judah will become as disgusting and unclean as the place called Tophet. This will happen because on the rooftops of all these houses, people have burned incense to worship the stars and planets, and they have poured out liquid offerings to false gods.
God is saying that Jerusalem's homes and palaces will become defiled and cursed because the people have been worshiping false gods and celestial objects on their rooftops instead of worshiping Him alone.
📚 Historical Context
In the time of the prophet Jeremiah, around the 7th century BC, the people of Judah and their kings were engaging in widespread idolatry by burning incense and pouring out drink offerings on their rooftops to the stars and other pagan deities. This practice directly defied God's commands in the Mosaic Law, which forbade worship of anything in the heavens, and it contributed to the moral and spiritual decay that led to God's impending judgment on Jerusalem. Jeremiah's prophecy used the defilement of Tophet, a site notorious for child sacrifices, as a symbol of the severe consequences for such unfaithfulness.
