Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.
So listen, the time is coming, says the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Tophet or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. People will bury the dead in Tophet until there's no room left.
God is warning that a place once used for horrific idol worship will become so filled with death and burial that it will be renamed the Valley of Slaughter.
📚 Historical Context
In the time of the prophet Jeremiah, around the 7th century BC, the Valley of Hinnom, also known as Tophet, was a location outside Jerusalem where the people of Judah engaged in child sacrifices to pagan gods like Molech, practices that God explicitly forbade. Jeremiah was delivering God's warnings to a rebellious nation facing imminent judgment for their idolatry and moral failures. As a result, God prophesied that this once-notorious site would be renamed the Valley of Slaughter, becoming a place overwhelmed with burials due to the coming destruction.
