For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.
This is what the LORD of Heaven's armies, the God of Israel, says: Listen, I will bring an end to this place while you watch and during your lifetime. There will be no more sounds of joy and happiness, no more wedding celebrations with brides and grooms.
God is warning that He will remove all joy and celebration from the land as judgment for the people's sins.
📚 Historical Context
Jeremiah prophesied during a time when Judah was facing God's judgment for their widespread idolatry and covenant-breaking, as the nation had turned away from faithful worship. In this verse, God warns through Jeremiah that the joyful sounds of weddings and celebrations would stop in Jerusalem due to the impending Babylonian invasion, symbolizing the severe consequences of their unfaithfulness. This reflects the historical backdrop of the exile around 586 BC, when the Babylonians destroyed the temple and deported many Judeans.
