Neither shall men tear themselves for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.
No one will cut themselves in mourning to comfort those who have lost loved ones, and no one will offer them the cup of comfort to drink when their father or mother dies.
God is saying that even the normal customs of grief and comfort will be absent during this time of judgment.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes during Jeremiah's prophecy about the coming destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon. In ancient Near Eastern culture, people would cut themselves as a sign of mourning and would share a ceremonial cup of wine with the bereaved to offer comfort. God is describing how complete the devastation will be - even these basic acts of human compassion and community support will cease.
