And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also shalt thou have no rest.
And he said, 'You will celebrate no more, you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Get up and cross over to Cyprus, but even there you will find no peace.'
God is declaring that Sidon will lose all reason for celebration and will find no refuge or rest, even when trying to escape to distant lands.
📚 Historical Context
This prophecy was given against Sidon, a wealthy Phoenician port city known for maritime trade and luxury. Sidon is called a 'virgin daughter' because despite being attacked, it had not yet been completely conquered and destroyed. Chittim (Cyprus) was a common destination for Phoenician merchants and refugees, but God declares that even this traditional place of safety would offer no relief.
