Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.
Then you must choose cities to serve as cities of refuge for yourselves, so that anyone who accidentally kills someone can run there for safety.
God is providing safe places where people who accidentally cause someone's death can find protection from revenge.
📚 Historical Context
This was part of God's instructions to the Israelites as they prepared to settle in the Promised Land. In ancient times, family members were expected to avenge a relative's death, but God established these refuge cities to protect those who killed accidentally from blood revenge. This system provided both justice and mercy in a culture where immediate retaliation was common.
