And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.
Jesus replied, 'Do wedding guests cry during the party while the groom is right there celebrating with them? Of course not. But there will come a time when the groom is taken away from them, and that's when they'll mourn and fast.'
There's a time to celebrate and a time to grieve, both are part of the journey.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of Matthew 9:15, Jesus is responding to questions from the Pharisees and John's disciples about why his followers do not fast, as was common in Jewish religious practices for mourning and repentance. Jesus uses a wedding metaphor, drawing from the cultural imagery of a joyful celebration with the bridegroom present, to explain that his time with them is one of rejoicing rather than sorrow. He also hints at his future suffering and death, indicating that fasting will be appropriate once he is gone.
