Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid.
So don't be afraid, my servant Jacob, says the LORD; don't be discouraged, Israel. Look, I will rescue you from far away, and your descendants from the land where they are held captive. Jacob will come back home and will have peace and rest, and no one will make him afraid anymore.
God is promising His people that even though they are far from home in captivity, He will bring them back safely and give them lasting peace.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, the nation of Judah was facing imminent invasion and exile by the Babylonian Empire as a consequence of their idolatry and disobedience to God. In this verse, God speaks words of comfort to His people, assuring them of future restoration and return from captivity. This promise was part of a larger prophecy in Jeremiah's book that foretold both judgment and eventual redemption for Israel.
