And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
Isaac dug out again the water wells that had been dug during his father Abraham's lifetime. The Philistines had filled them in with dirt after Abraham died. Isaac gave these wells the same names that his father had given them.
Isaac restored the wells his father Abraham had dug, which enemies had destroyed, and honored his father by keeping the same names for them.
📚 Historical Context
In the patriarchal era of ancient Canaan, wells were vital sources of water in a dry and contested land, and Abraham had dug several to provide for his family and flocks as part of God's promise to make him a great nation. After Abraham's death, the Philistines filled in these wells, likely as an act of rivalry or to control scarce resources in the region. Isaac's reopening of the wells and renaming them after his father's tradition demonstrated his commitment to preserving his ancestral heritage and fulfilling God's covenant.
