May the LORD punish me severely if I don't do this: If my father plans to harm you, I will warn you and help you escape safely so you can go in peace. And may the LORD be with you just as he has been with my father.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE

Jonathan is making a solemn promise to David that he will protect him from King Saul's anger, even if it means going against his own father.

📚 Historical Context

This verse comes during a tense time when King Saul was becoming increasingly jealous and hostile toward David, whom God had chosen as the next king. Jonathan, Saul's son and David's best friend, was caught between loyalty to his father and his covenant friendship with David. Jonathan was risking his own position and safety by promising to warn David of any danger.
