And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
The cities you give to the Levites should come from what belongs to each tribe of Israel. Those tribes that have received large territories should give more cities, and those that have received smaller territories should give fewer cities. Each tribe should give cities to the Levites based on the size of the land they inherited.
God is establishing a fair system where each tribe contributes cities for the Levites proportionally based on how much land they received.
📚 Historical Context
This instruction was given as the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land after 40 years in the wilderness. The Levites were the priestly tribe who would not receive their own territory like the other tribes, but instead would be given specific cities scattered throughout Israel to live in while they served God and the people. This system ensured the Levites would be distributed among all the tribes to provide spiritual leadership.
