Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon: for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them.
The tribe of Simeon received their land from within Judah's territory, because Judah's portion was too large for them to use by themselves. So Simeon's inheritance was located inside Judah's boundaries.
The writer is explaining that the tribe of Simeon received their land from within Judah's territory because Judah had been given more land than they needed.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Joshua, after the Israelites conquered the Promised Land, the territory was divided among the twelve tribes as part of God's fulfillment of His covenant. The tribe of Judah received a large portion that exceeded their needs, so a section of it was allocated to the tribe of Simeon to ensure all tribes had their rightful inheritance. This arrangement highlighted the importance of equitable distribution based on God's directives during the settlement of Canaan.
