And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
He spotted a fig tree in the distance that looked full and healthy, so he walked over hoping to find some fruit on it. But when he got there, it was all leaves and no figs, which actually made sense since it wasn't even fig season yet.
Sometimes what looks promising from far away turns out to be all show and no substance.
📚 Historical Context
In the Gospel of Mark, this verse occurs during Jesus' journey to Jerusalem in the final week of his earthly ministry, as he demonstrates his authority through various acts. Fig trees in ancient Israel were expected to bear fruit along with their leaves, so Jesus approached this one anticipating figs, but it was not yet the season for them, symbolizing a deeper spiritual lesson about unfulfilled expectations. This event foreshadows Jesus' cursing of the tree the next day, which points to God's judgment on those who appear fruitful but lack substance.
