And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
As for those of you who survive, I will fill their hearts with fear while they live in enemy territory. Even the sound of a leaf rustling in the wind will make them run away in terror. They will run as if someone is chasing them with a sword, and they will stumble and fall even when no one is pursuing them.
God is warning that those who disobey Him will live in constant fear and anxiety, becoming scared of even harmless things like the sound of leaves.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Leviticus, God is speaking to the Israelites through Moses, outlining the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience as part of their covenant agreement in the wilderness. This verse specifically warns of the psychological effects of persistent rebellion, such as overwhelming fear and paranoia, which would make even minor sounds seem like threats. Historically, these prophecies often related to later events like the Babylonian exile, where Israel experienced defeat and terror.
