And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
The LORD became furious with Israel and handed them over to raiders who plundered them. He allowed their surrounding enemies to defeat them so completely that they could no longer defend themselves against any of their foes.
God allowed Israel's enemies to overpower them because of His anger at their disobedience and unfaithfulness.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Judges, which recounts the period after Joshua's death when the Israelites were settling in the Promised Land, the nation of Israel repeatedly abandoned God by worshiping idols and breaking their covenant with Him. This verse illustrates God's response to their disobedience, as He allowed enemy nations to oppress and defeat them as a form of divine discipline to teach them the consequences of unfaithfulness. This pattern of sin, judgment, and eventual repentance was a recurring theme in Israel's early history under the judges.
