Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.
Why am I watching them fall apart and retreat? Their strongest warriors are getting crushed, running away as fast as they can without even looking back. Fear has them completely surrounded, says the Lord.
When God moves, even the strongest people can't help but run scared.
📚 Historical Context
Jeremiah was a prophet in ancient Judah during the 7th and 6th centuries BC, a time when regional superpowers like Egypt and Babylon were vying for control in the Middle East. This verse is part of a divine oracle against Egypt, describing the panic and defeat of their army in battle, which likely refers to historical events such as the Babylonian victory at the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC. It underscores God's role in judging nations that rely on their own might rather than submitting to Him.
