Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
So now the Lord, the God who commands heaven's armies and watches over Israel, is asking: Why are you doing this terrible thing to yourselves? You're destroying your own people, men, women, children, even babies, wiping out everyone from Judah until there's literally no one left.
God's asking why you're choosing to destroy your own future when he's trying to save it.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet is addressing the Jewish people who had fled to Egypt after the Babylonian conquest of Judah, where they continued to engage in idolatry despite previous divine judgments. This idolatry was the root cause of Judah's downfall, including the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, as God had repeatedly warned through Jeremiah. Now, God is directly questioning their persistence in these sins, forewarning that it would lead to the complete eradication of their remnant, leaving no survivors in Judah.
