Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.
Because of all the messed up stuff they did that made me furious, burning incense and worshipping gods they didn't even know, gods that neither they nor you nor your ancestors had any real relationship with.
They chose fake gods over the real one, and it didn't end well.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah in the 6th century BC, the people of Judah had turned away from God by worshiping foreign gods and burning incense to them, which directly violated their covenant with the Lord. This idolatry was a major reason for God's judgment, leading to the Babylonian exile and the destruction of Jerusalem. Jeremiah was addressing the Jewish refugees in Egypt, warning them that their continued idolatry would bring further disaster.
