They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.
They have gone back to the same sins their ancestors committed, who refused to listen to my words. They have followed and worshiped other gods. Both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their ancestors.
God is saying that His people have repeated their ancestors' mistakes by turning away from Him to worship false gods, breaking the special relationship He established with them.
📚 Historical Context
Jeremiah prophesied during the final decades before Judah's exile to Babylon (around 626-586 BC). Despite God's repeated warnings through prophets, the people had returned to the idol worship and disobedience that characterized earlier generations. This verse refers to the covenant God made with their ancestors at Mount Sinai, which included exclusive worship of God alone.
