I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
I will hand them over to their enemies and to those who want to kill them. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds in the sky and the wild animals on the ground.
God is declaring that He will allow those who broke their covenant to be defeated by their enemies and left unburied as food for scavengers.
📚 Historical Context
During the reign of King Zedekiah, the people of Judah had made a covenant to free their Hebrew slaves as commanded by God's law in Exodus, but they later broke this promise out of selfishness. This act of hypocrisy and unfaithfulness led to God's severe judgment through the prophet Jeremiah, as Judah faced the threat of Babylonian invasion. In Jeremiah 34:20, God declares that He will hand them over to their enemies, resulting in their bodies being left unburied for scavengers.
