And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
And people will no longer need to teach their neighbors and relatives, saying, 'You need to know the LORD,' because everyone will already know me, from the least important person to the most important, says the LORD. I will forgive their wrongdoing and never remember their sins again.
God is promising a future time when everyone will personally know Him without needing to be taught, and He will completely forgive and forget their sins.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet is addressing the people of Judah during a time of widespread spiritual unfaithfulness and the looming threat of Babylonian exile, as a result of their repeated disobedience to God's covenant. He foretells a new covenant that God will make with His people, one that surpasses the old Mosaic covenant by placing God's law directly in their hearts. This promise highlights a future era of intimate, personal knowledge of God, where forgiveness of sins will be complete and universal, from the least to the greatest.
