Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon:
So don't listen to your prophets, fortune-tellers, dream interpreters, magicians, or sorcerers who tell you, 'You will not have to serve the king of Babylon.'
God is warning His people not to believe false spiritual advisors who are telling them what they want to hear instead of God's truth.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah in ancient Judah, the Babylonian Empire under King Nebuchadnezzar was threatening invasion as part of God's judgment on the nation's unfaithfulness. False prophets, diviners, and other occult figures were misleading the people by promising deliverance and urging resistance against Babylon, which contradicted God's direct warnings through Jeremiah. This context highlights the tension between true divine revelation and deceptive human claims during a period of impending exile.
