For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.
Even if you wash yourself with strong cleaning agents and use lots of soap, your sin is still clearly visible to me, says the Lord God.
God is saying that no amount of external cleaning can wash away the stain of sin from our hearts, only He can truly make us clean.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context, Jeremiah was a prophet speaking to the people of Judah during a period of widespread spiritual unfaithfulness and idolatry, around the 7th century BC, when the nation faced judgment for abandoning their covenant with God. This verse uses the everyday items of nitre (a natural cleaning agent) and soap to symbolize futile human attempts at purification, highlighting that Israel's sins were deeply entrenched and could not be erased by mere external rituals. God is declaring through Jeremiah that true cleansing requires heartfelt repentance, as their iniquity remained evident before Him.
