Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.
So the LORD will completely destroy Israel's leadership from top to bottom, removing both the highest and lowest ranks, all in a single day.
God is declaring that He will swiftly remove all of Israel's leaders, from the most important to the least, as judgment for their disobedience.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Isaiah in the 8th century BC, the northern kingdom of Israel was rebelling against God through widespread idolatry and breaking their covenant with Him, leading to divine judgment. The metaphors "head and tail, branch and rush" represent the nation's leaders and common people, indicating that all social classes would face punishment. This prophecy pointed to the Assyrian invasion and conquest of Israel around 722 BC, which resulted in the exile of its inhabitants.
