Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
So when the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, he will punish the king of Assyria for his proud heart and arrogant attitude.
God is saying that after he uses Assyria to discipline his people, he will then judge Assyria's king for his pride and arrogance.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Isaiah in the 8th century BC, the Assyrian Empire was a powerful force invading and threatening the kingdom of Judah, including Jerusalem on Mount Zion, as a form of divine judgment on God's unfaithful people. Isaiah's prophecy reveals that God would use Assyria as an instrument to discipline Judah, but once that purpose was fulfilled, God would then punish the Assyrian king for his own pride and arrogance. This underscores God's sovereign control over nations, ensuring that no one escapes ultimate accountability.
