Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his LORD return unto him.
Ephraim made God absolutely furious with their actions. So God's going to let them face the consequences of their choices, all the damage they've done is coming back to them, and their shame is going to be their own responsibility.
When you keep pushing God's boundaries, eventually you'll have to deal with the mess you made yourself.
📚 Historical Context
Hosea was a prophet in the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the 8th century BC, a time when the nation enjoyed economic prosperity but turned to idolatry and alliances with foreign powers, breaking their covenant with God. Ephraim, representing the leading tribe in the north, symbolizes the entire kingdom's persistent rebellion and unfaithfulness, which provoked God's anger as described in this verse. As a result, Hosea's prophecies warned of impending judgment, including exile and loss, to call the people back to repentance.
