Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;
Don't make treaties with the people living in the land, because they worship false gods and offer sacrifices to them. If you do, they will invite you to join their religious feasts, and you'll end up eating food that was sacrificed to their gods.
God is warning His people not to make agreements with idol-worshiping nations because it will lead them away from worshiping Him alone.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Exodus, God is speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai after the Israelites have been delivered from Egypt and are preparing to enter the Promised Land. He is renewing the covenant and issuing laws to protect the nation from spiritual corruption, specifically warning against making treaties with the Canaanites who practiced idolatry. This instruction was vital because the surrounding cultures' pagan rituals could entice the Israelites to abandon their exclusive devotion to God and adopt foreign gods.
