Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.
Anyone who makes a similar mixture, or anyone who puts any of it on an outsider, will be completely separated from their people.
This verse establishes that the sacred anointing oil was exclusively for holy purposes, and misusing it would result in being cut off from the community.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Exodus, God was giving Moses detailed instructions for the construction of the tabernacle and the preparation of sacred items for worship, including a special anointing oil. This oil was a unique formula meant only for consecrating priests and holy objects, symbolizing God's holiness and the need for the Israelites to maintain separation from the surrounding pagan cultures. Any misuse of it was strictly forbidden to preserve the purity of their covenant relationship with God.
