This census took place near the end of Israel's 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, just before they entered the Promised Land. Ephraim was one of Joseph's two sons who received tribal status, making Joseph's family line especially prominent among the twelve tribes. This counting was necessary to organize the tribes for military service and for dividing the land they were about to inherit.
