This verse is part of the second census Moses conducted of the Israelites in the wilderness, about 40 years after leaving Egypt. The census was taken to count the fighting men and organize the tribes before entering the Promised Land. Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel, and his tribe would later become one of the most prominent in Israel's history.
