Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
This prophecy was written during or shortly before the Babylonian exile when the Jewish people were facing the destruction of Jerusalem and deportation from their homeland. Isaiah was speaking God's promise that the exiled people would one day return to Zion (Jerusalem) with great celebration. This verse also points beyond the historical return from Babylon to the ultimate restoration God would bring through the Messiah.
