During the Babylonian exile, the Jewish people were allowed to return to Jerusalem under a decree from King Cyrus of Persia to rebuild the temple as part of God's promise to restore His people. However, opposition from local inhabitants, who saw the rebuilding as a threat, led them to appeal to Persian authorities, resulting in a halt to the work. This cessation lasted until the second year of Darius, another Persian king, when the efforts to resume the temple construction were eventually addressed.
