And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
In the biblical narrative, God had promised Abram and Sarai many descendants, but Sarai's barrenness led her to give her Egyptian maid, Hagar, to Abram as a surrogate to fulfill that promise, which was a customary practice in ancient Near Eastern societies for childless women. This decision backfired when Hagar conceived and began to look down on Sarai, escalating tensions in their household. Sarai then blamed Abram and appealed to God as the ultimate judge in their dispute.
