The Jewish exiles had returned from Babylon and begun rebuilding the temple around 536 BC, but faced strong opposition from local enemies who convinced the Persian king to stop the work. The construction remained halted for about 15 years until King Darius I took the throne in 522 BC and later allowed the work to resume.
