And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.
And if you completely forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, serving and worshipping them, I warn you today that you will certainly be destroyed.
God is warning that if His people abandon Him to worship other gods, they will face destruction.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is delivering his final speeches to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. He warns them not to forget God's faithful provision during their trials, especially as they face the allure of foreign gods in Canaan, which could lead them astray from their covenant with Him. This verse serves as a solemn reminder of the consequences of idolatry within the broader context of God's laws given to ensure their flourishing as a nation.
