And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
You must stay outside the camp for seven days. Anyone who has killed someone or touched a dead body must purify themselves and their captives on the third day and again on the seventh day.
God is establishing purification rules for warriors returning from battle, requiring them to ceremonially cleanse themselves before rejoining the community.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Numbers, the Israelites had just returned from a military campaign against the Midianites, as commanded by God through Moses, which involved warfare and the handling of the dead. After the battle, those who had killed or touched the slain were required to undergo ritual purification to remove ceremonial uncleanness, as this was a key aspect of Old Testament law to preserve the holiness of the community. This practice reflected the ancient Israelite understanding of purity and separation from death's defilement in their covenant relationship with God.
