Made Simple — Modern English Translation

Translated by Verse Made Simple Editorial
KJV ORIGINAL
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.

✦ MADE SIMPLE

This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: You saw how my anger completely destroyed Jerusalem and its people. Well, if you go to Egypt, that same fury is coming for you. You'll become a living example of what happens when you disobey, people will be shocked by what becomes of you, they'll use your story as a warning, and you'll never see your homeland again.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE

God's warning hits different when you've already seen what his anger can do.

📚 Historical Context

In the historical context, Jeremiah was prophesying to the remnant of Judah after the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem, a time when the city had been destroyed and its people faced ongoing threats. The people were considering fleeing to Egypt to seek safety from potential Babylonian reprisals, despite God's commands. God, through Jeremiah, warned them that this decision would result in the same divine judgment they had witnessed in Jerusalem.
