I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
I have also seen terrible things among the prophets in Jerusalem: they commit adultery and live in lies. They encourage those who do wrong, so that no one turns away from their wickedness. To me, they are all like the people of Sodom, and those who live among them are like the people of Gomorrah.
God is expressing His deep anger at the religious leaders in Jerusalem who are living immoral lives and encouraging others to do wrong instead of calling them to repentance.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah in the 6th century BC, Judah was experiencing widespread moral and spiritual corruption as the nation faced impending judgment from Babylon due to idolatry and unfaithfulness to God. False prophets in Jerusalem were misleading the people by promoting lies and immoral behavior, such as adultery, while encouraging evildoers instead of calling for repentance. God compared these prophets and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to Sodom and Gomorrah, the biblical cities destroyed for their extreme wickedness, to underscore the depth of their sin and the coming divine punishment.
