For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
This is what the LORD says: 'Look, I am about to throw out the people living in this land all at once, like stones from a slingshot. I will bring trouble upon them so they will experience what I have warned them about.'
God is warning that He will forcefully remove His people from their land and bring suffering upon them so they will finally understand the consequences of their disobedience.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of Jeremiah, the prophet was speaking to the people of Judah during a time of spiritual decline and impending invasion by the Babylonians in the 7th-6th century BC. God, through Jeremiah, was warning the Israelites of His judgment for their persistent idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness, using powerful imagery like slinging out the inhabitants to symbolize forced exile and distress. This verse fits into a broader narrative of prophetic calls for repentance amid rising threats from foreign powers.
