And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.
And the LORD will create over every home on Mount Zion and over her gatherings a cloud and smoke during the day, and the brightness of blazing fire at night. This will be a protection covering all the glory.
God is promising to personally protect His people with His visible presence, just like He did when He led Israel through the wilderness with a cloud by day and fire by night.
📚 Historical Context
In the 8th century BC, the prophet Isaiah was addressing the people of Judah during a time of political instability and threats from Assyria, warning of judgment for their unfaithfulness while also foretelling a future era of divine restoration for Zion. This verse draws on the Exodus imagery of God's protective cloud by day and fire by night, symbolizing His presence and guidance for Israel, to promise a similar safeguard over Jerusalem in the messianic age. It reflects the cultural belief in Yahweh as a defender of His chosen people amidst turmoil.
