And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.
And he said, 'Look up and see, all the male goats mating with the flocks are striped, spotted, and speckled. I have seen everything that Laban has been doing to you.'
God is telling Jacob that He has been watching how Laban has been treating him unfairly and is now blessing Jacob's flocks.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative of Genesis, Jacob had been working for his uncle Laban in Haran, where they agreed on wages involving the breeding of flocks, but Laban repeatedly changed the terms to cheat him. God appeared to Jacob in a dream to reveal that He was supernaturally causing the flocks to produce speckled and spotted offspring in Jacob's favor, as a sign of divine intervention. This event underscores God's role as a protector of the vulnerable in the ancient Near Eastern context of family disputes and livestock management.
