And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
And the first son she has will carry on the name of her dead husband, so that his name won't be forgotten in Israel.
This verse ensures that when a widow remarries her deceased husband's brother, their first child will carry on the dead man's family name and inheritance so his memory lives on.
📚 Historical Context
In ancient Israelite society, preserving family lineage was crucial for inheritance, tribal identity, and the fulfillment of God's promises to the nation. This verse is part of the levirate marriage law, which required a brother to marry his deceased sibling's widow and father a child with her, ensuring the dead man's name and estate continued within Israel. This practice helped maintain social stability and prevent the extinction of family lines in a patriarchal culture.
