Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
Her first husband, who divorced her, cannot take her back as his wife after she has been married to another man, because that would be disgusting to the LORD. You must not bring this sin into the land that the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance.
This verse teaches that a man cannot remarry his ex-wife if she has married someone else in between, as God considers this morally wrong and harmful to the community.

In ancient Israel, as part of the Mosaic Law given through Moses, this verse addressed the social and moral regulations surrounding divorce and remarriage to uphold the community's holiness and prevent actions seen as defiling. It was delivered to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land, emphasizing God's desire for purity in family and societal structures. This law reflected the cultural context of the ancient Near East, where marriage was tied to covenantal faithfulness and the avoidance of practices that could corrupt the land God had promised.
