As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:
This is what God did for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir, he destroyed the Horites who lived there before them, and Esau's people took over their land and have lived there ever since.
The writer is showing how God helped Esau's descendants take over the land of Seir by removing the previous inhabitants, just as He was doing for Israel.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is recounting God's guidance through Israel's wilderness journey, reminding them of how God had previously helped other nations claim their lands. He specifically mentions how God enabled the descendants of Esau, the Edomites, to take over the region of Seir by displacing the Horims, allowing them to live there ever since. This highlights God's sovereign role in history, showing how He allocates territories to fulfill His purposes for different peoples.
