The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.
The Horites used to live in Seir long ago, but the descendants of Esau took over their land after defeating them and settled there instead. This was similar to what Israel did when they took possession of the land that the LORD gave them.
This verse explains how God allowed different peoples to conquer and settle in the lands He had designated for them, just as He did for Israel.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is recounting the history of the nations around Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land, emphasizing God's guidance in their journey. The Horites were an ancient people who originally lived in the region of Seir, which became associated with the Edomites, descendants of Esau. This verse draws a parallel between the Edomites displacing the Horites and God giving the land of Canaan to Israel, highlighting divine sovereignty over territorial changes.
